piratical adventures in the big easy

the krewe of pirates and wenches of new orleans are going to grant a childs wish for make a wish foundation this weekend. a giant childrens parade will weave through the quarter, as we celebrate this opportunity. Party like a Pyrate / shore leave 2011 is not to be confused with pyratecon or pyrateweek. both of these entities are folks who aren't from new orleans.

the problem with pyrateweek is its timing. As most of us in new orleans knows, when mardigras ends, and lent begins, we can all take a deep sigh, and break from all the chaos. exceptions? st pats, st josephs, and super sunday. all long standing traditions. to add another "event" after these huge events, is pretty exhausting, and thats why the new orleans krewes prefer to do their fest in between french qtr, and jazz fest. this is when the city starts to come alive again, the temps outside are nice and breezy, and we're ready to roll again.

last nights kick off was at the bourbon orleans, with a rum contest. The winner was one vanessa sternick, who created a champagne mojito with blackbeards rum. the meet and greet went really well, and the pirates were off this am for a scavenger hunt, and dinner party. a pub crawl rounds out the evening, with a show at one eyed jacks, with Debauche and the Valpariaso mens chorus.

tomorrows festivities begin at eleven am in pirates alley, with nola rising paint party, face painting, and then parade at three. 504 dancing man will lead the parade with kids in tow, and the US Navy band. this is going to be a great day of fun, and hopefully our child will be feeling well by tomorrow to roll with us.

sunday is a bloody mary party at finnegans, and then I'm off to the healing center for a bbq, and then work at the hiho.

come september, look for the wenches to do another parade, with make a wish. Its nice to have a good bond with such a wonderful organization.

Party Like A Pyrate

YES INDEED, the people of New Orleans have their own pyrate party. Not to be confused with nolapyrateweek... thats not a locals event, but party like a pyrate is. Pub Crawls, haunted pyrate ghost tours, parades, and all out fun, with the people who actually live here.

Krewe of Wenches will be sponsering a wonderful little charity that we will unveil here really soon. keep a weather eye out!

once upon a mardiclaw.com

Its been a long pyrateweek, and its finally over, THANK GOD! and I can say this year brought some changes. I knew this going in, since last year I was the one who pretty much did all the local groundwork. This year I decided not to do so much work, but to do what I love most... which is put a parade together. Being the only person who actually lived here, I felt it necessary to see what the other two "event organizers" had to bring to the table. I'm glad I did.

So rather than go on about "pyrateweek", I choose to put something NEW on the table. The pyrateweek folks can go back to canada. I choose to find the support for a three day fun filled pyrate adventure, nola style, and festival style. Picking a different date, one that coincides with the krewes here, and not up against so many other great events...

this year was up against the freret street fair, the tennessee williams fest, louisiana food fest, and super sunday. So after jazzfest, I'll be calling together various folks to plan something much more fun for next year. I think everyone agrees with me, that a pyrate event in nola, should be done here locally, not done over the internet from miles away.

the bottom line? the locals showed support for local stuff... but have tired of the BS, that ONCE again, has been brought by someone who doesn't live here, yet knows more than all of us who do.

parking issues

now that I've sold my car, I can relish in the fact that I'm not part of the arguement between home owners, renters, and people who like to park their abandoned cars in front of my house. I mean, if your not driving your car? park it on your side lot, at YOUR house, not in front of mine.

this was a HUGE problem after katrina, and now has returned, as they took away parking spaces, so we could have a bike lane to nowhere. great urban planning, whomever decided to screw us... I really don't understand the bike lane. it turns on my street, runs up to the cemetary, and ends.

we didn't need a bike lane, this isn't a busy street, and we certainly didn't need to have parking spaces taken away. I'm sure the next thing coming? will be paying for parking, as I laugh, because I'm now carless.

I do agree with my neighbors. I mean, if your going to leave your car abandoned? put it on your property. the coming and going of random spaces, always has worked fine, until someone new moves into "the orange house", and then dumps their car in front of my house.

I remember one lady who dumped her car, and parked it about a foot and a half out into the street. her car was full of clothing, garbage and more. she didn't live in the orange house, but she had friends there. I got up one morning and decided I'd had enough. I pushed her car with mine, and then she appeared, and finally moved it. she had texas plates.

then there was the guy who dumped his car without an engine in it, in front of my house. Another who dumped a car that they were stripping.

it gets old. show some respect for your neighbors, and don't hog all the spots. put your abandoned vehicle somewhere else.

SURREYS uptown

I have had another surrey's opportunity for the holiday season. The new surrey's opened a while back next to le bon temps rouler. WHAT a great marriage of breakfast food, and bloody mary's while you wait.

I'm pretty partial to surrey's food. I love the shrimp and grits, the banana's fosters french toast, costa rican breakfast, and even the tofu breakfast with its thai twist, a little heat, a lotta bell peppers. ( I'm not fond of mushrooms, so they make it bell peppers for me )

Lita is an awesome chef. she has a few specialties that aren't on the menu, but I've had the pleasure of trying them. I especially loved the butternut squash soup, and the white bean and turkey chili she had over the holiday.

you can sit outside, or in. you can even sit outside with your dog, which many folks do. I really enjoyed the clientele, and the service.

I especially love the new art up. YES, its myself, judy digeorge, rachelle o brien, and one other I can't pronounce, or spell. but either way, you gotta admit, surrey's always has great stuff on their walls.

get up there enjoy lunch, brunch or breakfast, and buy some art. ENJOY!

the case of henry glover vs NOPD

and the officer laughed, as he burned the body of henry glover, a man who just days after hurricane katrina, was brought by his friends to the police station, for medical attention. his friends beaten, and henry taken out in a car to the levee, a bullet to his head, and a flare in the car, burning the evidence. Including, the officer returning to the scene of the crime to steal the skull from the victims body.

I don't think Duress properly explains what happened here. I think RACIST SHIT is a better explanation. COLD blooded murder, in the name of NOPD.

And to think our tax payer money is spent on racist shitheads like the officers who did this.

I know that they needed a break, we all did. but it doesn't give ANYONE the right to murder.

five year anniversary of katrina, with wild man john and flagboy honee

I really want to take the time this year to commemorate the growth we've had since K. I know that the oil spill seems to be overshadowing everything, but I think its important to rejoice in rebuilding, and passing this five year anniversary.

With the Treme ending its first season, seeing friends immortalized on television, knowing that maybe, just maybe, Americans now have a sense of what we're about, or not, just knowing that my hood has changed for the better.

Used to be a drug house, just houses away... now gone. Used to be murders one block up by children, upon children... finally stopped. Seeing the possiblity of a grocery store within a block of my house? Well, progress indeed.

But my point is this... Join me, and The Mardi Gras Indians this August 29th, as we do a mini pub crawl/secondline, into the hi ho lounge... to celebrate our moving forward, and our positive affirmations, that this city has come a long way since that fateful day.

I collected hurricane stories when I returned to New Orleans... As a Bartender in the CBD. many of the stories I got were from folks returning to the ninth ward. The restaurant/Bar I worked in was well known for soul food, so many of the customers were African American, Creole, and born and raised in New Orleans. They provided some very interesting insight into things I had no idea that went on. I will share these stories from time to time, eventually I would love to publish them, along with some 7,000 photos I took when I returned home. I went out and shot spots over and over as they changed. you'll see some of these from time to time too.
